2023 pre-Punahou Carnival "Haku" Workshop

After a 2 year break due to Covid, the Punahou Carnival Haku making sessions opened again for 2 days on Jan. 31 & Feb. 1.  It was a reunion and fun time for everyone to be able to get our hands on the lovely floral materials and create works of wearable art.

I was lucky to get my friends who are in the floral industry to join me for the night.  Dale, Cory, Christine, Dayna and Sue.  My daughter Sarah was the photographer.

On the second night, we were rushed and didn't have too much time to take pics but I did take a short video.

2019 Punahou Carnival "Haku"

It's that time of year again...Punahou Carnival 2019.  This year I had some of my florist friends join in the pre-carnival lei making.

Punahou Carnival 2013 Haku Booth

A selection of material for my first head lei.  I chose a green/yellow theme for the first one.

Song of India foliage, hydrangea, moa, palapalai fern, dusty miller, green cup and saucer and some kind of grey bud clusters for my first lei.

Wear your head lei down low on the forehead, not up high like a halo.

Next selection of flora for a bluish, purpley/fuschia, green and white haku.

Shinobu fern, hydrangea, some kind of small green calyx, hoya, bougainvillea, bleeding heart.

Final selection was based on my desire to do something "different" and less frilly.

A more ethnic feel to this one with strips of red ti leaf, and yellow tipped moa.

More lei selections to chose from.  I hope you found this an interesting look into a long standing tradition and a very Hawaiian tradition at the Punahou Carnival.  Please come and join us if you have never done so.  The carnival is usually held on the first Friday and Saturday of February.
